How The Becoming Arts Collective grew a loyal social following in under 18 months — without a national media budget.
thebecomingartscollective.comPittsburgh, PA · Theatre Incubator
The Becoming Arts Collective is a Pittsburgh-based theatre incubator devoted to emerging playwrights and the development of original theatrical works. When they came to me, the organization was newly formed, mission-rich, and almost entirely invisible online — a common starting line for arts nonprofits operating outside the major-market spotlight.
The brief was deceptively simple: build an audience.
BAC didn't need a marketing campaign. It needed a brand presence — a steady, recognizable voice that could turn strangers into followers, followers into ticket-buyers, and ticket-buyers into donors.

Short-form video became the front door — the format the platform actively pushes to non-followers. Behind-the-scenes glimpses of the rehearsal room, playwright voice, ensemble moments. Designed not to go viral, but to be findable by the audiences who didn't yet know Becoming Arts existed.
Strong, well-composed imagery anchored the feed for the audience already earned — production stills, gala moments, ensemble portraits — reinforcing recognition with every scroll.
Around tentpole events — the world premiere of Attachment Theory, the Origins gala, the New Hazlett co-presenting announcement — I orchestrated multi-week campaigns layering email, press, and social into a single connected narrative.
"The discipline wasn't in any one post. It was in the rhythm."
I didn't optimize for spikes. I optimized for the boring, beautiful flat line of consistent daily presence — the line that, over months, becomes a brand.
Reactions are cheap. Comments cost thought. Shares cost reputation. Every campaign was designed to push audiences down that ladder, not just up the count.
As the data came in, I listened to it — and refined Becoming Arts's voice, cadence, and content mix to match the people actually showing up. Brand building is a conversation, not a broadcast.
A new arts organization doesn't need to go viral to build a loyal following. It needs a brand strategy disciplined enough to compound — week after week, post after post.
For Becoming Arts, that audience is now in the tens of thousands. And it's still growing.
I help arts organizations, mission-driven brands, and emerging ventures turn social platforms into genuine brand assets.
